Police searching for suspect who allegedly sexually assaulted a 14-year-old San Jose girl

San Jose police have issued a warning to residents in the neighborhood surrounding Madden Avenue and Schott Street in East San Jose to use caution when walking alone or confronted by strangers following an attack on a 14-year-old girl Saturday afternoon.

Police are searching for a man who allegedly sexually assaulted the girl on the nearby pedestrian overpass after asking to use her cell phone. The victim was walking with a friend after 5 p.m. when the suspect approached them. The victim offered her phone to the man while her friend continued walking.

About an hour later when the friend could not find the girl, she called police and reported the victim as missing. Police arrived and began a search of the area and located the girl by calling her cell phone. She answered, stating that she was on the pedestrian bridge and asked for help.

Police saw the suspect following the victim, but he fled upon seeing officers. A foot pursuit ensued, but the suspect escaped by climbing over a fence into the Gramercy Place neighborhood.

Police believe the man forced the victim into a secluded area on a foot path adjacent to Interstate 680 where he assaulted her before she was able to escape.

San Jose police ask anyone with information regarding this crime to contact the department’s Sexual Assault Investigations Unit at 408-277-4102.
